To coincide with my current exhibition at the Artist Residence Hotel, Brighton, I’ll be holding a 2nd series of public portrait sittings with contemporary Brighton individuals- ‘Drawing Brighton’, starting on the 15th August.

Saturday saw the last of our 5 life drawing sessions with a difference, brought to you by Artists, Models, iNK- a unique creative collective based in Brighton.

We’re glad to say that every week was fully booked, with people creating some wonderful work- we had artists working in many different mediums, from pen and ink to ipad.

Sadly, due to circumstances out of my control, next Saturday’s Automatic Drawing session has been cancelled. Sorry to those interested!

Fret not though, on Saturday 19th, I’ll be showing all 4 episodes of ‘Ways of Seeing’- John Bergers’ groundbreaking 1972 programme about art and the ways in which we see it.

The screening is free and will start at 5pm, with tea, coffee and perhaps some wine and cake ;) More details here.

On Saturday the 26th, I’ll be handing over to James Burt, who will be taking us on a Psychogeography-inspired adventure. Tickets are likely to sell out fast, so do make sure you save yourself a space.

Psychogeography is a way of looking at cities to see the magical and the surprising in familiar places. Following a brief introduction, this workshop will feature a number of creative experiments.

Whether you’re an artist, poet, writer or just a pedestrian, learn to see Brighton in a new way.

April is almost over, which means it’s almost time for some more Different ways of seeing!

Our first session, on the 12th, will be guest hosted by Simon Ward:

Held a little later in the evening, Simon Ward brings you an introduction/experimental session based around automatic drawing techniques. These techniques are used by many creatives, some of whom have re-named it ‘yoga for artists’, as it allows us to connect directly with our subconscious.

We have a very limited number of places available, due to the nature of the session, and still for a very affordable £5, so please do book early for a place.

Our drawing sessions in April are being taken over by Artists, Models, Ink- a unique creative collective of life models. We aim to explore the complex relationship between artist, model and muse, through events combining life drawing, music, performance and spoken word.

Not your average life drawing sessions here! Each week will be posed, designed and presented by each of the 6 members in turn.

Week 1 was artist in residence and model, Kate’s session, exploring the dark muse: Marchesa Luisa Casati. It was a great session, and you can see photos of some of the work created on the Artists, Models, Ink page.

Tickets are very much on their way to selling out for session 2, which will be brought to you by popular life model, Frankie:

What a great way to end the month- a very talented group of artists gathered at the hotel this afternoon to draw the wonderful tattooed aerialist, Kitty.

As this session was focused on tattoos, Kitty was the perfect model, and she held 2 2 hour poses for the assembled group.

'Tattoo drawing'

This Saturday, it’s our last ‘different ways of seeing’ session.

From 3-5, we’ll have a tattooed model posing for us for either two 1 hour poses, or one 2 hour pose (dependent on numbers.)

Many people find it intimidating drawing heavily tattooed skin, as it is effectively drawing someone else’s art, so this should be a great opportunity to focus on it, and how it can compliment and work with the human form. As a life model with tattoos myself, I’ve sometimes heard people say that they’d love to draw my tattoos, but that they simply don’t have the time…this is your chance!

To get you in the mood, I highly recommend looking at the work of Shawn Barber- a US painter and tattoo artist, who has brilliantly merged the world of tattooing and fine art in his ‘Tattoo portraits’.

Of course, none of us are likely to be able to create photo realistic tattooed life drawings, but it is interesting to see how he approaches his paintings. Through his twitter feed, we can see from progress photographs that he seems to paint the figure first, and then adds the tattoos.

Whilst working out logistics for Saturday’s ‘Shadow drawing’, I was reminded of the work of Tim Noble & Sue Webster, and their shadow installations. (see their ‘bust’ of the late Isabella Blow, above.)

I’m reminded of these pieces by recent reposting of them on various social networking sites- titles such as ‘real or photoshopped?’ appear above them, and I can’t help but think how different the response to them is, now that we live in these technologically connected days.

Whether these creations are ‘real’ or not, is beside the point. Photoshop certainly wasn’t something I had access to 12 years ago. They were beautifully thought out, and put across a wonderful idea- that we could see things differently…even things such as piles of rubbish.

I was lucky enough to see many of their shadow pieces with my very eyes at an unforgettable exhibition I visited back in 2000 (12 years ago, I am surprised to find out when I search online).

‘Apocalypse’ (click for predictably curt info about the exhibition from the BBC) was, and is, still one of the most memorable and inspiring exhibitions I have ever been to- one that I constantly return to in my mind. Truly fascinating work, from all the far-flung corners of the art world.

Noble & Webster were a stand-out addition to the exhibition, which I visited on numerous occasions.

I’m looking forward to seeing how, many years on from seeing these, we can work with shadows and silhouettes within a life drawing environment. Shadows are always seen as dark, frightening- an indication of a mysterious figure in low light, but how will it actually affect our drawing?

A wooden maquette was passed around for attending artists to pose, and for the model to then interpret.

In a brand new series of events throughout April, starting on the 7th, six life models present their personal creative influences and ideas via unique weekly life drawing and performance events.

Join us for a delve into art history, inspiration, and the world of artists’ models, in association with Kate Shields’ current residency at the Artist Residence Hotel, Brighton, and her ‘Different ways of seeing’ sessions.

‘The Marchesa Luisa Caseti: Invention and manipulation.’

Using the Marchesa Caseti- celebrated muse and model of many late 19th century/early 20th century artists- as a starting point, a life drawing session looking into how the model can manipulate the artist and viewer by presenting a ‘character’ or specific image.

THIS SATURDAY! For week 3 of ‘Different ways of seeing’ we bring you ‘Voodoo drawing’!

This will be a unique session where you can interact creatively with our model, by choosing the poses, using our ‘voodoo doll’, which Emma (our model) will then interpret.

‘Drawing Movement’ on Saturday was a challenging and enjoyable 2 hours. I personally felt myself loosening up a bit, as I’ve felt a bit stiff creatively lately.

Next week is ‘Voodoo drawing’! Should be a fun and engaging session- I’ll be handing around a wooden drawing maquette to let everyone pick a pose, which the model will then interpret. I’ve tried this before and it really does create more of a connection between class and model.

THIS SATURDAY: ‘Drawing Movement’.

3-5pm at the Artist Residence. £5 to draw.

A 2 hour session focusing on drawing the figure in motion.

I’d recommend having a look at the sketches and paintings of Toulouse Lautrec and Edgar Degas (Lautrec himself was very influenced by Degas) to get an idea as to how we can capture movement within still drawings.

How did these artists, and so many others, capture the figure in motion without photographs for easier reference? By studying the human form moving of course!

We’re very lucky to have professional life model Frankie, who is also a dancer, as our model. We’ll begin with some dance-inspired poses, before Frankie begins to dance for us.

We begin at 3, so please do arrive in good time in order to get comfortable and ready with your materials. I’ll have some materials and drawing boards as before, but please do bring any special requirements you may have.

Slightly less spaces available for this one, due to needing a bit of extra space for Frankie to move around, so please book asap!

Saturday saw the first ‘Different ways of seeing’ sessions: ‘The quick draw’ at the Artist Residence hotel.

For the first hour, our wonderful model, Feryal, did a series of very short, energetic poses ranging from 2 minutes to 5 minutes, in order to encourage more fluid and quick drawing techniques- a challenge for everyone, including myself!

Once everyone was warmed up, we had a short tea break and a look around at each others drawings, before getting back into 5 minute poses, 10 minute poses, finally ending as we began- with 2 minute poses.

Everyone I spoke to seemed to get a lot out of drawing quickly, and it was great to draw such a great and dynamic model. Thanks Feryal!

Above are a couple of my sketches, and I’ll be posting some pictures on this very blog of the drawings by those who came along.
